UNITY OF CHILDREN AT A GLANCE

A Bit of Background

Driven by a goal to ensure vulnerable and disadvantaged children in Rwanda are able to reach their full potential, Unity of Children works in partnership with local organisations to ensure children who need support have access to education, healthcare and protection. With the generous funding of UK grant-making trusts, community groups and individuals, we have raised over £250,000, every penny of which has gone directly to support hundreds of children in Rwanda.

PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION

The majority of families living in Nsinda village are subsistence farmers, live in basic housing and have no access to electricity or running water. Qualified teachers at Ikirezi Pre-School provide vital early years education for around 40 children aged between 3 and 5 in the local community. As well as offering a level of education that would not otherwise be available to the local community, Ikirezi Pre-School also ensures that these children have a safe and constructive place to go while their families find work or tend to their crops. Children are also provided with food and drinks to go some way to addressing the issues of malnourishment in the area.

HOMEWORK CLUB

The Kibungo homework club offers additional assistance to primary school children from 5 local schools who are in need of support. Every week around 40 children attend the homework club where students are able to ask trained teachers specific questions about the topics they are currently working on and receive the individual support they require. Working individually and in small groups, these children are able to learn in a supportive environment and develop the confidence to succeed in their studies.

Lillian is 11 years old and has benefited from Unity of Children funded education projects since she was 3 years old.

Lillian's parents are both tailors and earn very little finding work in the local community. The family doesn't own land on which to cultivate food and struggle to support Lillian and her siblings.

A bright and hard-working student, Lillian says the support she has received from Unity of Children has made a real difference to her educational development and has given her the foundations she needs to succeed in her studies.

Now at secondary school, Lillian is working towards a brighter future and helps her siblings with their studies - even those who are in older years!
